Here is my question to you all:
Can music corrupt? To elaborate on that, can listening to "Bad" music change a person for the worse? Can "Good" music cause a person to have good behavior? And I am not talking about immediate change, I am talking about gradual change to an individual if they listened to "bad" or "good" music very often. Furthermore, I am not in anyway talking about subliminal messages or anything like that. This isn't a conspiracy thread, it is more of a psychological thread. So, can music change someone? Or is it just a tool for entertainment only?

hmmm, im not really sure.
I've a friend who's a fanatic about metal music and he's a little ............ off (for lack of better word) perhaps it does, or maybe the people that are... off, gravitate to bad music?

Of course it can, is my view,
But, I'd say it is more common that music changes with personality. I think it is to some extent almost subconscious how people tend to reflect their own lives through songs. So when they are upset they listen to certain types of music, or the random song they happen to hear matches with their life surprisingly well. That is why I despise some kinds of music. Song lyrics can easily become a rolemodel, that encourages certain behavior, even though the song's creators didn't live like that, or even think their songs could have such influence. On the other hand, it depends on how one interpretes the content. Even though I listen to metal, in which's lyrics battle and killing is ever present, I only pick up themes of honor, duty and endurance through harsh times, not the themes of killing and violence. That way I say music alone can do little to one's person, but all it needs is a starting point, a crack in the mind, which it can open up into a passage, in time.

Well i think its more vice versa, like to say a person becomes bad after bad music isn't entirelly true, but that as a person changes, there taste in music, amounge other things, can change

Music definatley effects my mood.
Like if i am sad i'll go listen to a sad song. and be even more sad. Or if i am listening to an empowering song. i'll wanna go change the world. Just depends.

By the way I have to mention this could be expanded on other types of entertainment as well: games and films at the least. I've noted many times that after watching a movie with a strong plot and strong characters (not physically, but with powerful personaölities) I tend to go in this mood where I expect everything to be as epic as possible, timings and everything. I forge elaborate plans from world domination to love interests or creating a secret society. But that hardly affects my personality, though I quess that enough exposure could do something.
But I quess it's better to stick to the music for now.

I think this debate is a bit flawed. For "good" and "bad" music is purley opiniative. You cannot really say that this is good and this is bad. I think thatit depends purley on the person. If the person thinks the music is good, then it will most likley affect them positivley. If they think their music may be bad then it could affect them in a negative way. |

But that isn't the qwustion. The question is if music can CAUSE change, not FORCE change

A theme or idea present within a song can inspire someone's own, original idea, but it is still up to the individual to dissect and rationalize that idea. It is all up to someone to change. Could a song be in part, or in whole the cause of "change" within someone's psychology? It's entirely possible. I wouldn't fully blame music for anything, however, because in the end, every person can decide whether or not they wish to adhere to any idea.

"You know your old when you start calling peoples music Devil Music."
xD I agree with Kristoffer. How a music affects somone is entirley up to that person. Thus cant be blamed on the on the artist or genre the person is interested in. |
